"This essay was originally written in 2000. It represents an early attempt of mine to redress the failure of art historians to deal with the question of emotional responses to art. It also reflects my long-standing sense that the new cognitive neurosciences offer important possibilities for illuminating the relationship between how pictures look and how people respond to them emotionally. But the present essay is simply a broadly-sketched outline of one possibility suggested by a particular historical case. More fine-grained and specific proposals for bridging the disciplines will be found in my later work on the subject." — David Freedberg Other links: An interview with David Freedberg on art and mirror neurons. |
